High-order finite volume schemes for layered atmospheric models

چکیده
Abstract. We present a numerical scheme for the solution of a class of atmospheric models where high horizontal resolution is required while a coarser vertical structure is allowed. The proposed scheme considers a layering procedure for the original set of equations, and the use of high-order ADER finite volume schemes for the solution of the system of balance laws arising from the dimensional reduction procedure. We present several types of layering based upon Galerkin discretizations of the vertical structure, and we study the effect of incrementing the order of horizontal approximation. Numerical experiments for the computational validation of the convergence of the scheme together with the study of physical phenomena are performed over 2D linear advective models, including a set of equations for an isothermal atmosphere.

متن کاملNumerical Investigation on Compressible Flow Characteristics in Axial Compressors Using a Multi Block Finite Volume Scheme
An unsteady two-dimensional numerical investigation was performed on the viscous flow passing through a multi-blade cascade. A Cartesian finite-volume approach was employed and it was linked to Van-Leer's and Roe's flux splitting schemes to evaluate inviscid flux terms. To prevent the oscillatory behavior of numerical results and to increase the accuracy, Monotonic Upstream Scheme for Conservat...
متن کاملA Finite Volume Formulation for the Elasto-Plastic Analysis of Rectangular Mindlin-Reissner Plates, a Non-Layered Approach
This paper extends the previous work of authors and presents a non-layered Finite Volume formulation for the elasto-plastic analysis of Mindlin-Reissner plates. The incremental algorithm of the elasto-plastic solution procedure is shown in detail. The performance of the formulation is examined by analyzing of plates with different boundary conditions and loading types. The results are illustrat...
متن کاملHigh Order Compact Finite Difference Schemes for Solving Bratu-Type Equations
In the present study, high order compact finite difference methods is used to solve one-dimensional Bratu-type equations numerically. The convergence analysis of the methods is discussed and it is shown that the theoretical order of the method is consistent with its numerical rate of convergence. The maximum absolute errors in the solution at grid points are calculated and it is shown that the ...
متن کاملMaximum-principle-satisfying and positivity-preserving high-order schemes for conservation laws: survey and new developments
In an earlier study (Zhang & Shu 2010b J. Comput. Phys. 229, 3091–3120 (doi:10.1016/ j.jcp.2009.12.030), genuinely high-order accurate finite volume and discontinuous Galerkin schemes satisfying a strict maximum principle for scalar conservation laws were developed. The main advantages of such schemes are their provable high-order accuracy and their easiness for generalization to multi-dimensio...
